Sprinklers running on the wrong day: the current schedule and the fix

If your sprinklers are running on a day, or at a time, that does not match Hernando County’s current rules, the system is very likely mechanically fine. This is almost always a program mismatch, either because the county’s schedule changed since the controller was last set, or because a power outage reset a controller with a dead backup battery.

Hernando County’s current watering schedule

Hernando County is under a Southwest Florida Water Management District Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage order, extended through March 31, 2027. It assigns each address exactly one watering day a week:

No property waters on Saturday or Sunday. On the assigned day, watering is only allowed 12:01 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. or 8:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.; a property under one acre may use only one of those two windows, and a property one acre or larger may use both. Aesthetic water features are limited to 4 hours of run time, and vehicle washing is only allowed on the address’s assigned watering day. Hand watering, micro-irrigation, and drip irrigation are exempt from the one-day limit and may run any day, before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

Check this first (five minutes)

1. Confirm your assigned day using the table above.
2. Open your controller and check the current program: which day(s) and which start time(s) it is set to run.
3. If the program shows a different day, or a start time outside the allowed windows, that is the entire problem in most cases. Reprogramming to the correct day and window fixes it with no parts needed.
4. If the controller will not hold the new program, or reverts after a short time, that points at a controller hardware issue rather than a simple setting; see the blank controller / lost program page.

Why this happens so often

Watering restrictions in Hernando County have changed more than once over the years as SWFWMD adjusts the shortage order in response to conditions, and a controller does not update itself. A system programmed correctly under a previous schedule keeps running on that old program indefinitely unless someone manually updates it, which means every schedule change creates a wave of “wrong day” calls from homeowners who assume something broke when the real issue is simply an outdated program. A controller that lost its memory after a power outage (commonly from a dead 9-volt backup battery) can also default to a factory schedule that has nothing to do with your assigned day at all.

What we do about it

We check and correct the watering-day and time program as part of every service visit, at no separate charge, regardless of what you originally called about. A system we repair for an unrelated reason still gets left on the correct legal schedule, since a repaired system running on the wrong day is not actually fixed. If a wrong-day program turns out to be the entire issue, that visit is the standard $75 to $150 service call with no additional repair charge.
