Toro sprinkler heads: what fails and what repairs cost

Toro’s T5 and T7 rotor series are common on larger residential zones across Hernando County, valued for adjustable arcs and long spray distances. Toro publishes its own troubleshooting guide for these heads, and it is specific about telling apart two symptoms that look similar from a distance: no spray at all, and a head that pops up but will not rotate.

No spray from the nozzle

Toro’s own guidance identifies a plugged internal basket screen, clogged with sand, grit, or general debris, as the standard cause of a head that pops up but produces no spray. The fix is cleaning the screen, not replacing the head, and it is a genuinely routine maintenance item on systems that have run for a while without service, particularly relevant in Hernando County’s sandy Candler soil, which can work fine sediment into irrigation lines over years of operation.

Head pops up but won’t rotate

This is a mechanically different problem, and Toro’s guide gives two separate causes with two separate fixes. If the cause is insufficient water pressure reaching the head, often because the zone has more heads than the available flow can properly support, the fix is splitting the zone into two smaller zones, addressed on our Zone Coverage Fix & Adjustment page rather than by replacing the head itself. If the cause is debris inside the sprinkler head’s rotating mechanism, cleaning it out resolves the problem without any parts needed. Only after both of those have been ruled out does Toro’s own guidance point to the head itself being faulty and needing replacement.

When replacement is the honest answer

Rotor heads like Toro’s T5 and T7 series have a typical service life of 5 to 10 years depending on use and environmental exposure. A head that is well past that range, and that still has problems after the screen has been cleaned and pressure has been confirmed adequate, is usually more cost-effective to replace outright than to keep servicing piece by piece.
